WHO EXACTLY IS HILLAR C. MOORE III?

Hillar C. Moore III stepped into the scene of future journalists from all over the country June 7 at Louisiana State University to share his story.

Moore is the East Baton Rouge District Attorney of eight years; however, he did not always envision his life turning out this way.

Moore can be credited for many of his accomplishments, but like any other human being he dealt with challenges. After graduating high school at Brother Martin located in New Orleans, Louisiana, Moore attended his first year as an undergraduate at LSU. After receiving a 0.7 GPA after his first semester, he decided to remove himself from the college atmosphere and do some “soul-searching.”

Later receiving his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and finishing as valedictorian at Southern University Law School, he then knew what his future would soon be. Moore wanted to make a change in his community and with B.R.A.V.E. it became possible.

“I plan to work smarter and better and I think then we will be able to impact crime,”Moore explained when asked about his plan to improve the Baton Rouge community. B.R.A.V.E, which stands for Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination, is an organization that he is deeply affiliated with to help lower crime rates in the Baton Rouge area. In 2012, Baton Rouge suffered 85 murders and Moore knew that it was time for a change.

Moore explained that groups commit the homicides are “900 times more likely to be killed than any other kid in Baton Rouge” and they should put down their weapons and bring peace. With the cotinuation of B.R.A.V.E. this goal will soon be attained.

HOW KENNETH MILES BECAME A MAN TO OTHERS

“You can lead a horse to water but can’t make him drink it, well if you put his head under the water he’ll eventually take a gulp,” says Kenneth Miles when being asked how he gets his student-athletes so motivated to graduate.

Miles, who is the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Executive Director the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes at Louisiana State University, has played a big role on assuring student-athletes that they will graduate and his results is evident. Since starting in 2008, overall graduation rate has shot up 15 percent in addition to LSU’s football graduation ascending to 16 percent.

Miles plans on continuing this success with hopes of becoming Vice President of the Academic center.

DEBRA TALKS FLOWERS

When hearing the word “horticulturist”  very few thoughts may come to find due to lack of knowledge on this particular subject, but Debra Coltharp can answer any question you have about it.

“I’ve challenged myself nonstop,”Coltharp answers when being asked how she was able to get where she is today. Coltharp is the horticulturist at Louisiana State University and is the reason behind the upkeep of the college’s gardens. But with the budget cuts that have been in effect, exactly how long will LSU stay florally beautiful?

The horticulture’s unit of LSU budget has declined tremendously. The budget used to range from millions of dollars and has dropped to 150 thousand. Coltharp spoke on how this has deeply affected the way she can work on gardens with limited money.

Coltharp hopes to see a change on the budget decisions regarding the plant life of LSU.
